BRIDGEWATER MUSIC FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE
1. It is recommended that competitors not enter more than 5 solo classes per discipline.
2. Pianists and vocalists must enter at least 3 competitive solo classes to qualify for an award.
3. Instrumentalists must enter at least 3 classes (band/ensemble/trio/duet/solo) of which one must be a solo
class, to qualify for a major award.
4. In voice classes, Test Pieces must be performed in the prescribed key. In Own Choice Classes,
transpositions of a semitone above or below are permitted, except in Opera and Oratorio which must be
sung in the original key. Lieder must be sung in German.
5. In piano classes, a competitor may play a scale or arpeggio prior to the performance as a means of
testing the piano’s touch and responsiveness.
6. In vocal or choral classes the chord may be given on the piano at the commencement of each piece of
unaccompanied music. In string classes, competitors may have their instruments tuned by a teacher or
other person.
7. Repeats SHALL NOT be played unless specifically stated in a recognized syllabus. Da capo and dal
segno repeats SHALL be observed.
8. Adults (in addition to the conductor) must accompany choirs and bands. They are to sit with the
students, see that all is quiet during performances, do not allow students to leave the group, and watch
instrument cases etc.
9. In all classes, a selection must not have been performed by the contestant in another class in this
Festival, nor should the selection have been performed in competition at any Festival the previous year.
10. Set pieces may not be used as “Own Choice” selections.
11. In “Own Choice” classes, to avoid disqualification, the Adjudicator’s copy must be provided by the
competitor. Participants are required to deliver an original copy to the Adjudicator’s Secretary prior to
the class in which they are performing. PHOTO-COPIES ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED without
written consent from the publisher.
12. The title of the piece, page number, and class number should be clearly marked on the front of the score.
13. All “Own Choice” selections must be claimed from the Adjudicator’s Secretary directly after each class
or at end of each session.
14. Memorization requirements differ between the disciplines.

In Voice Classes, with the exception of Oratorio, repertoire should be memorized. In order to qualify for awards, memorization is required in three solo classes (includes Provincial class). Any performance where the music is used (except Oratorio) shall receive an adjudication only and therefore will be considered a non-competitive performance.

In Instrumental Classes memorization is not required.

In Piano Classes repertoire should be memorized. In order to qualify for awards, memorization is required in three solo classes (includes Concerto class). Any performance where the music is used shall receive an adjudication only and therefore will be considered a non-competitive performance.

Memorization is not required of those competitors performing in duets or trios.

Non-competitive performers may choose to perform with music or from memory.

In String Classes memorization is not required.

Elementary School Vocal Repertoire should be memorized.

15. Any performer wishing to enter any class non-competitively may do so by adding the letters “NC” after
the number of the class. Non-competitive performances receive only the adjudicator’s remarks and are not eligible for awards.
16. Participants in the Festival are requested to dress in suitable performance attire.
