PROVINCIAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

 

At the local festival one winner from each discipline may be named to compete at the Provincial Music Festival at the discretion of the adjudicator.  (Note:  to be eligible for the National Festival Competition, contestants must obtain a minimum of 85 marks in the appropriate classes in the local festival.)

 

It should be noted that there are both JUNIOR and SENIOR levels of competition at the Provincials in the following classes:  Vocal Solo, Musical Theatre, Piano Solo, String Solo, Woodwind Solo, Brass Solo, and Chamber Group.

 

Contestants in the Senior Vocal category shall not be over the age of thirty three, and contestants in all other senior categories shall not be over the age of twenty-eight as of December 31 prior to the Provincial Festival.

 

Contestants in all Junior Classes shall not be over the age of eighteen as of December 31 prior to the Provincial Festival.

 

A high standard of music selection is expected at each level, both Local Festival and Provincial Festival.

 

Memorization is mandatory in all Senior Classes with the exception of Chamber

Groups.  Memorization is strongly recommended in all Junior Classes with the exception of Chamber Groups.

 

 

JUNIOR LEVEL

 

In order to enter the JUNIOR level at the Provincials, the students must enter the SENIOR classes in the local festival which include the following:

 

For solos in Piano, Strings, Woodwind & Brass:

 

  • Two contrasting selections of a minimum Grade 8 Conservatory Level. 

  • Maximum time limit of 15 minutes.

 

For Vocal Solos:

 

  • Two contrasting selections of a minimum Grade 7 Conservatory Level.  It is recommended but not compulsory that one foreign language be used.

  • Maximum time limit of 15 minutes

 

For Chamber Groups:

 

  • Minimum Grade 4 Ensemble Literature is required. 

  • Two contrasting selections with a maximum time limit of 15 minutes.

 

SENIOR LEVEL

 

To advance to the SENIOR level at the Provincials, the students must enter the OPEN CLASSES in the local festival which include the following:

 

For solos in Piano, Strings, Woodwind, and Brass:

 

  • Selections must be of a University Level.

  • At least 2 consecutive movements of a Senior Sonata or Concerto, or a complete Concerted Work.  Unfortunately, there can be no piano concertos at the local festival due to the lack of a second piano.

  • One own choice, other than a movement from the work chosen above. 

  • Maximum time limit of 40 minutes.

 

For Vocal Solos:

 

  • 2 or more languages to be used

  • One selection from an Opera, with recitative where applicable, original key, language optional.

  • One Aria from a major sacred work, with recitative where applicable, original key, language optional.

  • One own choice selection.

  • Maximum time limit of 40 minutes.

 

For Musical Theatre:

  • One selection must be a Musical Theatre Ballad

  • One selection must be a Musical Theatre Up-tempo

  • One selection from the Musical Theatre Repertory

For Chamber Groups:

 

  • 3-6 people; one performer to a part

  • At least two consecutive movements of own choice selection.

  • One own choice selection (but not another movement of the above).

  • Maximum time limit of 40 minute
